A BRILLIANT night was had by all at Great Fulford yesterday (01/07/16)where Boris Johnson and our local MP Mel Stride joined 200 members andsupporters for a buffet-style dinner event. The former Mayor of London gave aninspiring and entertaining talk followed by an intensive question and answersession. The event followed the UK’sdecision to leave the European Union and Boris’s decision not to run in theConservative leadership contest.
During his speech Mr Johnson stressed the opportunities for the UKeconomy from leaving the EU but remaining part of a free trade area. Heemphasised the support needed for the agriculturalsector and argued that EU citizens already residingin the UKshould have the right to stay. Looking beyond Brexit, he also said that itshould be a priority for the next Prime Minister to help those who have notbenefited from the economic recovery as much as others have done and said morestill needed to be done to ensure multi-nationals pay their fair share of tax.
He concluded the evening by urging the Conservative Party to come togetheragain following the Brexit vote – something he was confident would happen.
CDCA Deputy Chairman for Membership and Fundraising, Patrick Johnstone, who helped organise the event, said afterwards:
“Both Boris and Mel spoke very well – it was an extremely enjoyableevening and one that certainly won’t be forgotten! A big thank you is due to Mrand Mrs Fulford for allowing us to use their stunning home and to everyone whohelped put on such a successful event.”
